**Man Sentenced to 18 Months for Car Theft Linked to Demosthenous Murder Case**
A 30-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Wednesday by the Limassol criminal court after he admitted to stealing a car that is believed to have been intended for use in the murder of Stavros Demosthenous. The court's decision was unanimous, with judges taking into account several factors, including the defendant's immediate admission of guilt, expressions of remorse, and his personal circumstances.
The court noted that the defendant had instructed another individual to steal a car belonging to a local priest on October 5, 2025, for a fee of €300. The stolen vehicle was discovered by police on October 14, 2025, just three days prior to the murder of Demosthenous, which occurred on October 17. Inside the vehicle, authorities found two containers filled with flammable materials, along with property belonging to the priest that was valued at approximately €1,750 and was reported missing.
In addition to the recent car theft charge, the court acknowledged that the defendant has three previous convictions related to similar offenses. The judges emphasized that a prison sentence was necessary, stating that any alternative punishment would be inadequate given the circumstances of the case. The 18-month sentence also takes into account the time the defendant has already spent in custody since October 19, 2025.
On the same day, three other individuals, aged 31 and two aged 28, who are standing trial for Demosthenous' murder, appeared before the court. They face serious charges, including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit murder, and illegal possession, transportation, and use of firearms and explosives. Their defense attorneys requested additional time to review new evidence and to negotiate with the prosecution regarding admitted facts.
As a result, the court has scheduled the trial for the murder suspects to commence on October 26, with subsequent hearings set for various dates in November and December.
