**Christodoulides Hails ‘International Momentum’ on Cyprus Problem**
Nicosia, Cyprus – President Nikos Christodoulides has emphasized the increasing international engagement regarding the longstanding Cyprus problem, highlighting a series of diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing the issue. Speaking at a reception for the Cypriot diaspora’s central council at the presidential palace on Wednesday, Christodoulides noted that the upcoming visit of EU special envoy for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto, scheduled for Friday, is a testament to this intensified focus.
The President remarked that the heightened interest from the international community, particularly the United Nations and the European Union, was underscored by the recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He described this development as indicative of a broader strategy initiated by his administration since taking office, aimed at fostering a conducive environment for resolving the Cyprus issue.
“This did not arise by chance but is the result of a very specific strategy that proves in practice that when we have clear goals and a strategy, we can bring results that strengthen our country,” Christodoulides stated. His comments reflect a commitment to proactive diplomacy and engagement with international partners to address the complexities of the Cyprus situation.
Fitto’s impending visit is expected to further solidify the European Union's commitment to the Cyprus problem, following his appointment by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Christodoulides characterized this appointment as a recognition of the Cyprus issue as a “European problem” and a priority for the EU, which he believes will enhance the prospects for a resolution.
In addition to Fitto’s visit, Christodoulides pointed to significant developments in the EU’s stance on the matter, including conclusions adopted by the European Council in April 2024 and a joint letter from the presidents of the European Commission and European Council to the UN Secretary-General in March 2025. These actions reaffirm the EU’s principles and commitment to supporting the settlement process in Cyprus.
During his address, the President also acknowledged the vital role of the Cypriot diaspora in promoting the interests of Cyprus abroad. He described their contributions as “invaluable” and of “decisive importance,” expressing gratitude for their efforts in amplifying the voice of Cyprus on the international stage.
“The voice of Cyprus, your own voice, is heard loudly abroad, and all of you are the best ambassadors of our homeland,” he said, commending the unity displayed by Cypriots overseas despite political differences. Christodoulides encouraged the diaspora to continue transcending dividing lines and operating as a cohesive entity, which he believes serves as a model for collaboration within Cyprus.
Looking ahead, the President reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to pursuing a “multidimensional and active foreign policy” with a clear orientation towards Western Europe. He argued that the country’s growing international role and its recent presidency of the EU Council exemplify the effectiveness of this approach.
