Demetriou emerges as the party’s strongest potential candidate, with the best chance of reaching the second round in every presidential election scenario examined. What the survey found DISY’s internal pre-election contest has already begun, and it has long been known at party headquarters that this was the case. For some time there had been rumours that polling would be commissioned as a tool in the battle over the party’s chosen presidential candidate. That has now happened. According to Phileleftheros’s exclusive information, a large pan-Cyprus poll of 1,500 people was presented yesterday, shortly after midday, to DISY’s senior leadership circle at the party’s offices. The poll examined various presidential election scenarios, covering both the first and second rounds. According to the same information, the poll was pan-Cyprus in scope, and a further poll restricted to DISY members will be carried out in the coming days. The poll’s presentation to DISY leadership yielded the following results: Annita Demetriou is the only DISY candidate who qualifies for the second round, alongside the Left’s candidate (the AKEL-backed candidate tested in finding 2 below). On the DISY side, the poll tested Demetriou, Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamporidis. On the AKEL side, it tested Andreas Mavrogiannis and Stefanos Stefanou. In the scenario pitting Demetriou against Christodoulides and Mavrogiannis, Mavrogiannis comes first with 30%, followed by Demetriou with 26%. Nikos Christodoulides is eliminated with 24%. The first-round contest between Demetriou and Christodoulides is therefore close, with Demetriou leading by about two points. Notably, Demetriou secures a place in the second round even in the scenario where ELAM does not field its own candidate. In that scenario her lead is marginal, but the poll’s key finding is that she is the only candidate, across all scenarios tested, who leads Christodoulides in the first-round contest. Testing Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamporidis as possible DISY candidates instead, Christodoulides qualifies for the second round by a double-digit margin, against Andreas Mavrogiannis as his opponent. The same results hold in the scenario where AKEL’s candidate is party general secretary Stefanos Stefanou instead of Mavrogiannis, though with lower percentages. This confirms the pattern seen throughout the poll: only Demetriou, among DISY’s tested candidates, makes the second round. The second-round contest itself is also close, whether Demetriou or Christodoulides advances against Mavrogiannis, who is presented as a strong contender. Against the other DISY candidates tested, he wins by a clear margin. The poll also found that Demetriou is the only candidate, across the scenarios tested, who can beat Christodoulides in a second-round contest against him. In all other scenarios, Christodoulides comes out ahead. In any case, there is still considerable time before the presidential election, and some of these figures may change significantly as time goes on. For now, though, the poll offers this snapshot, from which some very significant conclusions can certainly be drawn about trends within DISY. Demetriou on the Guterres visit DISY leader Annita Demetriou said Wednesday that UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s intention to convene a new expanded meeting, after the necessary preparation, keeps the process open. She said this preserves the prospect of resuming substantive negotiations. She noted that there were no developments signalling a substantive step forward, and no date was set for the expanded “5+1” meeting. Still, she said, it is important that the convergences already achieved continue to form the basis for the next steps. Demetriou said the moment calls for “seriousness, responsibility and, above all, focus” in order to achieve the progress the Secretary-General expects. She added that DISY will continue to contribute consistently and constructively to any genuine effort that keeps open the prospect of resuming substantive negotiations, always within the agreed UN framework and the principles and values of the European Union.
