In a significant law enforcement operation, police in Cyprus arrested 11 individuals on Sunday night as part of coordinated efforts to combat serious crime and enhance public safety. The arrests occurred in several key urban areas and were linked to a range of offences, including illegal possession of drugs, possession of anabolic substances, drug trafficking, money laundering, and other criminal activities.
According to a police statement, the operation aimed to address areas identified as particularly vulnerable to criminal activity. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to prevent serious offences, maintain public order, and improve the community's sense of security.
During the overnight crackdown, police conducted thorough checks on 554 drivers and 126 passengers, resulting in the arrest of the 11 suspects. Authorities also inspected 43 premises, which led to eight reports of various offences.
Traffic enforcement was a key component of the operation, with police issuing a total of 399 traffic citations for numerous violations. Among the infractions recorded were 104 instances of speeding. Additionally, 23 cases related to suspected traffic offences are currently under investigation.
As part of the traffic checks, officers impounded 19 vehicles and conducted 69 alcohol tests. Six of these tests resulted in reports for drink-driving offences, while four drivers tested positive in preliminary roadside drug tests.
The police emphasized that these operations are not isolated incidents but part of a continuous strategy aimed at preventing and suppressing crime. The increased police presence, targeted inspections, and rapid operational actions are designed to strengthen public safety, protect citizens, and uphold public order.
