**Family Asks for Donations Instead of Wreaths at Four-Year-Old’s Funeral**
The family of four-year-old Marios, who tragically passed away from meningitis, is requesting that mourners make donations in his memory rather than purchasing wreaths. The funeral service is set to take place on Tuesday at 5 PM at St. Savvas’ Church in Ypsonas. The family has expressed that the funds raised will be used to support two individuals currently undergoing chemotherapy.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the family wrote, “Your presence and love will be our greatest comfort. Our little angel, you flew to heaven too early, but you will remain forever in our hearts and souls.”
Marios succumbed to his illness at Makarios Hospital on Friday after suffering severe brain damage due to meningitis. His death was confirmed by the Kourion municipality, which subsequently canceled a scheduled event that evening as a sign of respect for the grieving family.
The timeline of Marios' illness began on July 8 when he developed a fever. His parents maintained communication with his pediatrician as they sought to address his worsening condition. When his health did not improve, he was taken to Limassol General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with meningitis. Concerned about his deteriorating state, his parents requested a transfer to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia. Unfortunately, during the transfer on July 14, Marios suffered brain death.
The circumstances surrounding Marios' diagnosis and treatment have raised questions and prompted scrutiny. Following the family's claims that meningitis was not diagnosed in a timely manner, dozens of individuals gathered outside Limassol General Hospital on August 10 to express their support and concern.
In response to the situation, Okypy, the organization overseeing the hospitals, has stated that both police and internal investigations are currently underway. They have indicated that statements are being collected as part of the inquiries. Okypy has committed to cooperating fully with authorities to ensure a thorough, unbiased, and objective investigation into all claims and complaints related to the case.
