**Farmers to Receive €1.17 Million in Compensation for Weather Damage**
The Cabinet of Cyprus has approved a compensation package totaling €1.17 million aimed at assisting farmers whose crops sustained damage due to extreme weather events occurring between 2025 and 2026. This decision, announced on Thursday, comes as a response to the increasing challenges faced by the agricultural sector due to climate-related incidents.
The compensation scheme, as outlined by the Ministry of Agriculture, encompasses a variety of crops that were adversely affected. Among the crops included are avocados, citrus fruits, olives, and potatoes. Additionally, the scheme provides for compensation related to damage inflicted on agricultural infrastructure, which may have occurred due to fires or storms.
Approximately 610 farmers are anticipated to benefit from this financial assistance, which will be disbursed through the Agricultural Production and Insurance Fund. This fund operates under the provisions of the Agricultural Production Risk Management Law, designed to support farmers in times of crisis.
The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized its commitment to supporting rural communities, particularly in light of the ongoing impacts of climate change and extreme weather patterns. Officials stated that they are dedicated to employing "all available tools" to assist the agricultural sector in navigating these challenges.
Farmers can expect to receive their compensation payments within an estimated timeframe of two months, providing timely relief as they recover from the adverse effects of recent weather events. The government’s initiative reflects a broader recognition of the vulnerabilities within the agricultural sector and the need for proactive measures to safeguard food production and rural livelihoods in Cyprus.
