Alexandros Alexandrou, the father’s defence lawyer, told state radio the father cannot clearly follow the trial proceedings and is in a very bad emotional state. Alexandrou said that at the first hearing he had asked for the case to be adjourned to a later date for the charges to be answered, as the defence had not yet received the full body of evidence from the prosecution. He explained he had also flagged his intention to file an application to lift the restrictions imposed on the father, which prevented him from travelling, so that he could attend his child’s funeral. A short date was then set to examine the request, Alexandrou said. Three consecutive dates were initially given so that the prosecution could raise an objection to lifting the restrictions, he noted, but no objection was raised. The court granted the application, and the father’s travel documents were returned to him, allowing him to travel. Alexandrou said the father had already returned home and that the two had spoken the previous day. He added that the father had been reunited with his family and that they were making arrangements for the child’s burial. The lawyer said the court and the Attorney General’s office had rightly recognised the human dimension of the case in approving the father’s return to the UK. The tragedy took place at around 6pm on July 12, when the three-year-old, who was staying with their parents at a hotel in the Paphos district, slipped from the father’s arms before falling from the fourth floor of the building. A case has been registered against the 37-year-old father for causing death through reckless and careless conduct, which he will answer on September 17.
