**Fifteen Years Since Deadly Mari Explosion: A Commemoration of Sacrifice**
Saturday marks the 15th anniversary of the tragic explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari, Cyprus, a catastrophic event that claimed the lives of 13 individuals on July 11, 2011. The annual memorial service honoring these fallen heroes took place in the morning at the Agion Ieromartiron church, located within the naval base, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and other dignitaries.
During the service, President Christodoulides delivered a poignant memorial address, reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of the 13 men who lost their lives in the line of duty. He also participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor their memory. In a gesture of respect, the President is scheduled to lay another wreath later at the Heroes’ Memorial situated at the premises of the Disaster Response Special Unit in Kofinou.
The explosion that occurred on that fateful day was a result of three powerful blasts, the most significant of which erupted around 5:30 AM. These explosions originated from shipping containers that housed munitions at the naval base. The incident not only resulted in the tragic loss of life but also left dozens injured and caused extensive damage to the naval base itself. The blast wave had far-reaching consequences, severely impacting the nearby Vasilikos power station and posing significant repercussions for the Cypriot economy.
In recognition of their sacrifice, the cabinet of Cyprus officially declared the 13 men who perished in the explosion as national heroes. Their legacy is commemorated through the Agion Ieromartiron church, which was constructed within the naval base grounds specifically to honor their memory.
As the nation reflects on this somber anniversary, the memorial service serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these individuals in service to their country. The annual observance not only pays tribute to their bravery but also underscores the ongoing commitment to remembering those who have served and protected Cyprus.
