**Fire Safety Education Programme Launched for Schools in Cyprus**
Astromeritis, Cyprus – A new initiative aimed at enhancing fire safety awareness among students was officially launched on Thursday at Astromeritis Primary School. The Fire Safety Education programme, developed through a collaboration involving the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the Cyprus Fire Service, the Cyprus Retired Firefighters Association, and the Bank of Cyprus’ SupportCY network, seeks to instill essential fire safety knowledge in both primary and secondary school students.
The event was attended by Education Minister Dr. Athena Michaelidou, who emphasized the critical role of safety in the educational process. In her address, she highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of prevention and self-protection from an early age, noting that collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations is vital for enhancing the resilience of school communities.
Chief Fire Officer of the Cyprus Fire Service and National Fire Coordinator, Nikos Longinos, also spoke at the event, explaining that the programme builds on previous training provided to educators across Cyprus. He stated that the initiative aims to equip students with knowledge and skills related to fire prevention and response through modern educational methods and hands-on learning experiences.
Elli Ioannidou, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at the Bank of Cyprus, represented the SupportCY network at the launch. She underscored the importance of investing in prevention and education, particularly in light of the increasing risks posed by climate change. Ioannidou reaffirmed SupportCY’s commitment to the Fire Safety Education programme, which includes school visits, educational presentations, and experiential activities led by volunteers. She also mentioned the ongoing fire prevention patrols conducted in rural areas in partnership with the Cyprus Fire Service.
The event featured additional remarks from several local leaders, including Panikos Tsouderos, President of the Cyprus Retired Firefighters’ Association, Aris Constantinou, Community Leader of Astromeritis, and Demetris Nicolaou, Headteacher of Astromeritis Primary School. Each speaker reinforced the significance of cooperation among various stakeholders to enhance the safety and preparedness of younger generations.
Following the formal presentations, students from Astromeritis Kindergarten and Primary School engaged in interactive educational activities designed to reinforce fire safety concepts. Members of the Cyprus Fire Service and the Cyprus Retired Firefighters’ Association provided valuable information on fire safety protocols and allowed students to explore fire engines and equipment used by the SupportCY volunteer corps.
The Fire Safety Education programme aims to cultivate a generation of citizens who are more aware of fire prevention, responsible behavior, and preparedness for future challenges. By integrating fire safety education into the school curriculum, the initiative seeks to empower students to take proactive measures in protecting themselves and their communities.
