**Five Face Trial Over Alleged Plot Targeting Israeli Interests in Cyprus**
Five men have been formally charged with terrorism-related offenses in connection with an alleged plot aimed at Israeli interests in Cyprus. The defendants, aged 32, 33, 38, 41, and 54, were committed to trial by the Larnaca criminal court on Thursday, with proceedings scheduled to commence on October 14.
The defendants appeared in a closed hearing at the Larnaca district court, where the judge ordered that all five remain in custody until the trial. A request for the release of the 54-year-old defendant was denied by the court.
The charges against the men are extensive, totaling 15 counts, which include conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit murder, participation in a criminal syndicate, terrorism offenses, and money laundering. Prosecutors allege that the defendants were part of a terrorist cell linked to Hamas, with plans targeting Israeli interests located within Cyprus.
The investigation into this alleged plot began in May when police conducted raids near Pentakomo, leading to the arrests of two Palestinian men, aged 32 and 38. Authorities claim that the younger suspect was involved in photographing potential targets throughout Cyprus and had acquired chemicals and equipment that could be utilized in the production of explosives. It is alleged that he was recruited by a member of Hamas.
The 38-year-old suspect, who is reported to be a physics professor, is accused of entering Cyprus illegally and was allegedly expected to assemble explosive devices after receiving instructions while in Turkey.
The investigation expanded with the arrest of a third suspect, a 54-year-old Palestinian who holds Cypriot citizenship. Prosecutors allege that he received parcels containing chemical substances pertinent to the investigation; however, he has denied any involvement in the alleged plot. Initially released on bail, his release was later revoked by the court of appeal, resulting in his return to custody.
Further developments in the case occurred when a fourth suspect, aged 41, was apprehended in Indonesia and subsequently extradited to Cyprus last month. Authorities have described him as the "ringleader" of the network, asserting that he directed operations from abroad and provided instructions related to the alleged plot.
A fifth defendant, also aged 32, was added to the case after investigators claimed he facilitated travel arrangements associated with the suspected network. Reports indicate that he assisted in the movement of one of the primary suspects to Turkey, where operational instructions were allegedly provided.
As the trial approaches, the defendants will remain in custody, with the Larnaca criminal court set to hear the case on October 14. The proceedings will address the serious allegations against the five men, who are accused of engaging in activities that threaten public safety and security in Cyprus.
