**Limassol Launches €9.2 Million Project to Replace Ageing Water Network**
Limassol, Cyprus - A significant infrastructure project has commenced in Limassol, with the aim of replacing approximately 100 kilometres of outdated water pipelines in the central area of the city. The Limassol district government (EOA) announced the €9.2 million initiative on Thursday, stating that it is designed to enhance water quality, reduce leaks, and lower maintenance costs for the city’s water supply system.
The project was officially launched by EOA president Yiannis Tsouloftas, who emphasized its importance for the local community. "This is a project that upgrades, modernises and strengthens our city’s water supply infrastructure," Tsouloftas remarked during the launch ceremony. He noted that the initiative would significantly enhance the daily lives of residents while contributing to Limassol’s broader modernization efforts.
Funded under the European Union's Thaleia 2021-2027 cohesion programme, the project is expected to cover 220 streets within a 2.6 square kilometre area, benefiting an estimated 40,000 residents. The construction phase is projected to last for 24 months, with an anticipated completion date set for the summer of 2028.
The scope of the project includes the installation of new water mains constructed from modern materials, along with necessary excavation and backfilling works. Following the completion of the construction, restoration efforts will be undertaken to repair roads and pavements affected by the work.
The new water network will span several key locations within Limassol, starting from the Enaerios area and extending along Makarios III Avenue towards the central fire station. The route will then follow the Garillis riverbed to Yildiz Street in the Tessera Fanaria area. From there, the pipeline will continue along Yildiz, Navarinou, Irinis, 16th June, and Gladstonos streets, ultimately reaching Pentadromos and proceeding along Anexartisias Street towards the seafront.
This initiative is part of Limassol's ongoing efforts to improve its infrastructure and ensure a reliable water supply for its residents. As the city continues to grow, projects like this are essential for maintaining public services and enhancing the overall quality of life for its inhabitants.
