**Four Fined Over Huge Duty-Free Tobacco Haul at Paphos Airport**
Paphos, Cyprus – Four foreign nationals were fined a total of €14,400 after customs officers at Paphos International Airport intercepted a significant quantity of duty-unpaid tobacco products in their luggage. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 4, just before the passengers were set to board a flight to London, according to a statement from the customs department released on Sunday.
The four individuals, comprising two British men aged 25 and 24, and two Danish women aged 23 and 22, were detained following a tip-off that prompted customs officers to conduct thorough searches of their luggage. During the inspections, officers discovered a staggering haul of 201 cartons of cigarettes, 168 individual packets of cigarettes, and 11.75 kilograms of rolling tobacco.
The seized tobacco products raised immediate concerns as they did not display the legally mandated health warnings in Greek and Turkish. Additionally, the absence of required security markings and traceability codes indicated that the products had not been properly declared for duty, thereby violating customs regulations.
Upon uncovering the illicit tobacco, customs officers arrested the four passengers for committing offenses in the act. Their luggage, along with the confiscated tobacco products, was taken into custody. Following the arrest, the individuals were released after agreeing to out-of-court settlements. The fines imposed on each passenger varied, with amounts set at €2,500, €3,900, €4,000, and €4,000, leading to a total collection of €14,400 by the customs department.
The customs department confirmed that the confiscated tobacco products would be destroyed in compliance with relevant procedures, ensuring that they would not re-enter the market. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by customs authorities to combat the illegal trade of tobacco products and enforce compliance with health and safety regulations.
The case serves as a reminder to travelers about the importance of adhering to customs regulations, particularly regarding the transport of tobacco products, which are subject to strict laws concerning duty payments and labeling requirements.
