**Golden Passport Trial Set to Begin in September**
The highly anticipated trial concerning alleged irregularities in Cyprus' citizenship-by-investment scheme, commonly referred to as the 'golden passport' case, is scheduled to commence on September 14 at 9:30 AM. The prosecution has informed the court that it has fulfilled all information requests made by the defense in preparation for the trial.
Senior prosecutor Charis Karaolidou announced on Friday that the prosecution had addressed all pre-trial inquiries in a letter dated July 20. This case involves former transport minister Marios Demetriades and nine co-defendants, which include seven individuals and two legal entities. The defendants face a range of serious charges, including influence peddling, bribery, extortion, conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and violations of the Council of Europe’s criminal law convention on corruption.
The list of defendants includes Marios Demetriades, Andreas Demetriades, Demetris Demetriades, Giorgos Demetriades, Eleni Symillides, Jing Wang, Josef Friedrich Santin, Vasiliki Georgiou Santin, as well as the law firm Andreas Demetriades & Co LLC and Delsk (Cyprus) Business Services Ltd.
During the pre-trial proceedings, defense attorney Elias Stefanou raised concerns regarding the identity of an individual mentioned in the indictment, who is alleged to have conspired to commit VAT fraud. The prosecution clarified that this individual is included on the witness list but is not facing any charges. This clarification was essential for the defense as they prepare their strategy for the trial.
Additionally, Petros Stavrou, the lawyer representing Marios Demetriades, sought further clarification on whether the aforementioned individual had been granted immunity from prosecution. The prosecution responded that no such immunity agreement exists.
Stefanou also requested more details regarding the evidence the prosecution plans to present during the trial. The defense has indicated its intention to object to any evidence that may relate to irrelevant testimony, personal communications, or matters protected by attorney-client privilege.
