**Government Rejects Proposals Outside UN Framework for Cyprus Settlement**
The Cypriot government has reiterated its firm stance against any proposals for resolving the long-standing Cyprus issue that fall outside the established framework of United Nations Security Council resolutions. In a statement made on Friday, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized that the primary goal remains the resumption of substantive negotiations, which last took place in Crans Montana in 2017.
Letymbiotis outlined that any potential resolution must adhere to the principles of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, which includes political equality among the communities on the island. He stated, “The goal remains unchanged,” underscoring the necessity for a solution that encompasses “one sovereignty, one citizenship, and one international personality” in line with UN resolutions and compatible with European Union law.
The spokesman's comments come amid discussions regarding new ideas that may have been proposed by both the UN and representatives from the Turkish Cypriot side. Reports have surfaced suggesting a possible shift towards a loose confederation model; however, Letymbiotis confirmed that he was not aware of any such proposals. He firmly stated, “If any ideas from anyone go beyond the framework of the UN Security Council resolutions, the answer is categorically negative.”
Letymbiotis also addressed the upcoming expanded conference that is being sought by the UN Secretary-General, clarifying that this meeting would not serve as an endpoint but rather as a crucial step towards restarting negotiations. He reiterated the importance of political will from all parties involved to achieve progress in the talks.
Acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead, Letymbiotis noted the political momentum surrounding the UN initiative, particularly with the recent appointment of European Commission Vice President Rafaelle Fitto as the EU special envoy for the Cyprus problem. This development is seen as a positive move towards facilitating dialogue and cooperation among the involved parties.
The spokesman highlighted the significance of the national council as a vital institutional platform for assessing the situation surrounding the Cyprus issue. He remarked that unity among the various stakeholders does not necessitate agreement on every matter but requires a sense of “responsibility, sobriety, and a shared awareness of historical responsibility.”
