The child had developed cerebral oedema and had been declared brain dead, remaining in the intensive care unit for weeks. The case had caused strong public emotion and reaction after his family raised complaints about how it was initially handled. The four-year-old’s ordeal Marios’s ordeal began in early July, when he contracted viral meningitis and his health deteriorated rapidly. He developed serious complications, including cerebral oedema, and needed treatment in the intensive care unit at Makarios Hospital, where he remained for weeks. He was later declared brain dead. At the same time, his family lodged complaints over what they described as mishandling, delays and omissions in his initial treatment, calling for a full investigation and for responsibility to be established where it was found. Police and internal investigations into the case began, and on August 10 relatives and members of the public held a protest outside Limassol General Hospital. Marios died on August 21, after a lengthy fight to stay alive.
