**House Selects Committee Members Amid Disagreements**
The House of Representatives in Cyprus convened on Wednesday to finalize the composition of its committees following the parliamentary elections held on May 24. The session was marked by notable disagreements among members regarding procedural and participation issues, reflecting the ongoing political dynamics in the newly formed legislature.
A total of 16 committees were established, with the Democratic Rally (Disy) and the Progressive Party of Working People (Akel) each chairing five committees, while the Democratic Party (Diko) and the National Popular Front (Elam) took three each. Disy maintained control over key committees, including foreign affairs, energy, legal, health, and institutions, positions it held during the previous parliamentary term. Similarly, Akel retained leadership of the interior, agriculture, labour, human rights, and refugee committees.
Diko's committee chairs include finance, education, and audit, while Elam will oversee the defence, environment, and transport committees. Additionally, three special committees focused on capital statements, parliamentary regulations, and ethics, along with an ad hoc committee for modernizing House regulations, will be chaired ex officio by House President Annita Demetriou.
The selection process was not without contention. Direct Democracy MP Diana Constantinides raised concerns about the absence of a committee dedicated to artificial intelligence and social media, emphasizing their growing relevance in daily life. In response, President Demetriou acknowledged that while the proposal for such a committee was not approved, it would be considered in the future.
Akel's parliamentary spokesman, Giorgos Loukaides, reiterated his party's respect for the electoral outcome but stated that Akel would not support any committee leadership positions held by Elam, pledging to vote against such candidacies. This stance prompted Disy’s parliamentary spokesman, Demetris Demetriou, to stress the importance of fair allocation of committee posts, acknowledging Akel's position while advocating for inclusivity.
Diko's representative, Panikos Leonidou, expressed approval of the selection committee's decisions but cautioned that excluding certain parties could inadvertently strengthen them. Alma MP Irene Charalambides echoed concerns about the chairmanship allocations but emphasized the need for collaboration in the new parliamentary term.
Diko President Nicholas Papadopoulos criticized the selection committee's procedures as irregular and potentially unconstitutional, calling for a legal opinion on the matter. Loukaides countered that the process required plenum approval rather than mere ratification. Diko MP Zacharias Koulias noted that traditionally, the plenum was only informed of the selection committee's decisions.
Despite the disagreements, the plenum ultimately voted unanimously to ratify the committee composition. However, Papadopoulos reiterated his request for a legal review, asserting that the process violated constitutional norms. Additionally, Constantinides raised questions regarding the electronic voting process, seeking clarification on the voting timeline.
The leadership of the committees is as follows:
- **Foreign Affairs**: Chair – Giorgos Karoullas; Deputy Chair – Charalambos Petrides
