A child was among those rescued after becoming trapped under an awning on the balcony of a fourth-floor apartment in Agios Dometios, Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis said. The child was rescued by emergency teams and was not injured. The Fire Service received 357 calls across Cyprus, 332 of which concerned Nicosia district. A fire also broke out in a large enclosed area in Kokkinotrimithia containing a large number of old vehicles, household appliances and construction materials. The Fire Service said crews were working to extinguish the blaze with five staffed fire engines. Initial information indicated that the fire was caused by a fallen object. Fallen branches in Strovolos as crews remain on alert Strovolos Municipality crews are on standby to deal with problems caused by the extreme weather conditions, Mayor Stavros Stavrinidis said in a social media post. He urged residents to be particularly careful when travelling and to avoid areas with fallen or dangerous branches and trees. The mayor said that the severe weather had caused fallen branches and other incidents that could pose risks to public safety and traffic. “The municipal crews are on standby to deal with the problems,” he said, adding that residents could contact the municipality on 99 643044 for urgent incidents linked to the extreme weather. Strovolos Municipality is monitoring the situation and intervening where necessary, he added. Authorities remain mobilised to deal with the incidents, while further and more detailed updates are expected as a clearer picture of the situation emerges. Road closed under Halepianes flyover due to flooding The road under the Halepianes flyover has been closed due to water accumulation on the road surface. Meanwhile, increased amounts of water and debris, including branches, have been reported at various points on the motorways. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed and follow instructions from police officers on duty.
