**One Dead, Five Rescued in Cape Greco Search and Rescue Operation**
Cape Greco, Cyprus – A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, August 29, 2026, when two boats sank in rough seas off Cape Greco, resulting in one fatality and the successful rescue of five individuals. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) reported that the operation commenced at approximately 14:30 in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area after three boats encountered severe difficulties.
According to the JRCC, the two boats were completely destroyed after running aground on rocks amid turbulent sea conditions. The situation prompted an immediate response from various emergency services, including the Police Aerial Operations Unit, the National Guard’s 460 Search and Rescue Squadron, and a patrol boat from the Famagusta Police Directorate. Additionally, personnel from the Fire and Rescue Special Unit (ΕΜΑΚ), Famagusta Fire Station crews, and Ambulance Service vehicles were mobilized to assist in the operation.
During the rescue efforts, a total of six individuals were recovered from the water. The first person rescued was located by the Famagusta police patrol boat and was reported to be in good health. Subsequently, five more individuals were rescued by helicopters. Among them, two were treated on-site and released after receiving first aid, while two others were transported to Famagusta General Hospital for further medical attention.
Tragically, one individual, identified as a Greek Cypriot, was found unconscious by the rescue helicopter. Despite immediate medical intervention, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
