A Sydney childcare worker, Hamish Tait, has been publicly named after being charged with 329 offences related to the alleged abuse of 136 children over a 16-year period. The 35-year-old was arrested in July 2022, but his identity was kept confidential until a court order was lifted on Monday, allowing for the release of his name as authorities continue to identify victims and reach out to families.
Tait faces a range of serious charges, including 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming individuals engaged in private acts without their consent. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have reported that they have already contacted 121 families affected by the allegations but are still working to identify an additional 22 victims.
Acting Commander Luke Needham of the AFP expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, even more so when the alleged perpetrator is an individual trusted with the care of our youth." Tait's employment history includes roles at 62 early childhood education facilities across Sydney from 2009 to 2025, with a focus on the city's north-west. The alleged abuse is said to have occurred at five locations, including four childcare centres and a private business operated by Tait.
In light of the serious nature of the allegations, the police have set up a dedicated website to provide information about the centres where Tait worked and to offer support to affected families. The charges also encompass 22 counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 years for the production of child abuse material and 18 counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 10 years.
The investigation into Tait began when authorities linked him to illegal online activities in June 2022. Subsequent raids on a property in Glossodia, located just outside Sydney, resulted in the seizure of electronic devices that contained child abuse material.
This case is part of a troubling trend in Australia, where several high-profile cases of alleged child abuse in daycare settings have emerged in recent years. Notably, Ashley Paul Griffith confessed in 2024 to 307 offences committed at childcare centres in Queensland and abroad over two decades. Additionally, in 2022, police in Victoria urged testing for sexually transmitted diseases for over 1,200 children after Joshua Dale Brown was charged with multiple child abuse offences at four daycare facilities.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert regarding the safety of children in daycare settings, with parents expressing concern over the potential for similar incidents to occur. The AFP is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the victims receive the necessary support during this challenging time.
