Heramb Karmarkar, 30, was an engineer on the Cyprus-flagged container ship, which came under attack off the coast of Oman on Sunday. The vessel, carrying 11 Indian nationals among its 24-member crew, was struck by an unidentified projectile, Cypriot authorities said. Iran said it struck the ship after it attempted to pass through an unauthorised route, despite warnings to change course. Karmarkar’s father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, told Reuters that the company managing the vessel informed him of the death. India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet responded to a Reuters request for comment made today. Karmarkar is the second Indian seafarer to die in the region within three days. Another Indian seafarer was killed yesterday, Tuesday, after two ships came under attack while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. New Delhi lodged a strong protest with Iran, summoning the deputy ambassador over Tuesday’s death of the Indian seafarer. Tehran says it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again after hostilities with Washington flared up last week, but US President Donald Trump says the waterway remains open to all commercial vessels except those belonging to Iran.
