From the domestic production of electronics and the assembly of RFHunter® systems, to strict quality control and shipping abroad, this is where 40 Cypriot scientists and engineers produce cutting-edge technology already used operationally by advanced armies overseas. philenews visited the facilities of SignalGeneriX in Limassol, one of the pioneering Cypriot companies with 20 years of activity in the sector, which has developed a system of significant operational value for armed forces. It is called RFHunter®, and it aims to answer one of the most enduring problems on the battlefield: pinpointing an opponent’s exact location through their radio emissions. According to the company, the system can detect the origin of emissions even when the target is in a fortified position, inside a building, or under cover, regardless of the time of day. Its philosophy comes down to a simple principle: whoever “emits,” even momentarily, can be located. SignalGeneriX chief executive Tasos Kounoudis, who guided us through the RFHunter® production line, said: “We are particularly proud of the fact that the system is fully export-oriented, with significant benefits already for the Cypriot economy, since six different countries, which for understandable reasons cannot be named, have already procured RFHunter®, while orders for 2026 exceed 30 new systems. It is also a significant national achievement that the system has twice won first prize at the Army Technology Excellence Awards 2025, an internationally prestigious institution whose winners include some of the world’s largest defence industries.” What is RFHunter® and how is it made? RFHunter® brings together several pioneering subsystems, from the radio receiver and antennas to the central processor, the signal analysis platform and the user interface, all combining into a valuable tool for detecting and identifying radio frequencies. The system is supplied in backpack form for ground operations, as well as in versions designed for integration into drones, vehicles and weapons systems. The manufacturing process is demanding, with all of its parts built here in Cyprus. The company has six specialised laboratories for developing electronic systems, antennas and the necessary software, along with three production and testing facilities, which we visited, seeing first-hand the entire process of designing, producing and testing the individual subsystems. The RFHunter assembly area is of particular interest, where all subsystems are brought together into a single, integrated Electronic Warfare system. It is a highly demanding process, requiring specialised expertise, high precision and strict quality control, since even the smallest detail can affect the accuracy, reliability and ultimately the operational performance of the system. Speaking with the experts behind the development and production of RFHunter®, they explained that the ability to design and produce all subsystems domestically, at SignalGeneriX’s own facilities, is one of the company’s most important competitive advantages. This full technological autonomy allows for the development of innovative solutions, rapid evolution and upgrading of products, strict quality control, and the adaptation of systems to each client’s specific operational requirements. This capability has already translated into significant international successes. RFHunter® is not simply a competitive Electronic Warfare product on the international stage. In a series of international competitions, it has prevailed against systems from some of the largest and most established defence industries in the world. The company has already exported RFHunter® to countries on three continents, steadily strengthening the system’s presence in international markets, and already holds a significant number of orders to be fulfilled within 2026. A telling sign of SignalGeneriX’s intense export activity: on the day of our visit to its facilities, a new batch of RFHunter® systems bound for abroad was already packaged and ready for shipment. How RFHunter® works RFHunter® is a passive radio-frequency detection and geolocation system. It operates without emitting any signal of its own, meaning it can locate an enemy without giving away its own position. When an enemy transmitter emits a signal, RFHunter’s antenna receives it. The system immediately calculates the angle, or azimuth, from which the signal is coming. This creates an imaginary straight line, known as a Line of Bearing, running from RFHunter over the target. At this stage, the direction is known, but not the distance. With a second measurement from a second location, since RFHunter is a mobile system, triangulation is achieved. As a result, the imaginary direction lines from the different measurements are automatically drawn on the system’s digital map. The point where these lines intersect is the target’s exact geographic position, or coordinates. About the company SignalGeneriX marks more than 20 years of activity in the high-technology sector, having evolved from a Cypriot company specialising in digital signal processing (DSP) into an outward-facing developer of advanced technologies and systems, with its main activity in defence and security. Its international orientation is also reflected in its numbers, with around 90% of its work today involving services, technologies and products aimed at markets abroad. Its presence in European defence programmes is particularly strong. SignalGeneriX secured six contracts under the EDIDP between 2019 and 2020, and 16 contracts through the European Defence Fund (EDF) between 2021 and 2025, taking part in major European defence-technology development consortiums. It also holds three international patents and two European trademarks, along with ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications, and certified facilities for handling classified information. Today, SignalGeneriX has a portfolio of more than ten defence products and technological solutions, the result of years of investment in research, development and domestic know-how. Since 2021, it has taken part continuously in major international defence-industry exhibitions, presenting its technologies and products to international clients and partners, and using that presence to break into new markets and further strengthen its export activity.
