**Madrid Leads Ranking of Europe’s Best Cities for Lone Holidaymakers**

Madrid has emerged as the premier European destination for solo travellers, according to the 2026 Solo Travel Index released by Quotezone, a UK-based travel insurance comparison platform. This comprehensive study aims to guide both novice and seasoned independent adventurers in selecting ideal holiday spots across Europe.

The research indicates a significant trend in solo travel, with 69% of holidaymakers expressing intentions to embark on solo trips over the past year. Additionally, global online searches for "solo travel" have surged by an impressive 223% in the last decade. The study reveals that a substantial 74% of independent travellers prefer to explore alone to avoid waiting for companions, while 57% appreciate the flexibility of crafting their own itineraries. Furthermore, 54% of respondents indicated that stepping out of their comfort zones is a key motivation for travelling solo.

To determine the rankings, Quotezone assessed various popular European cities based on critical practical criteria. These included the affordability of public transport, availability of hostels, options for organised group tours, and local internet connection speeds. Notably, safety was given a higher weight in the scoring system, reflecting its importance to solo travellers.

Madrid topped the list, achieving high scores across multiple metrics. The city boasts a wide range of hostels, affordable public transport with an average fare of €1.29, and impressive internet speeds of 263.31 Mbps. Additionally, Madrid scored well in personal safety, with a rating of 71.3.

Following Madrid, Prague secured the second position, distinguished by its exceptional safety rating of 75.2. The city is known for its affordable historic attractions and vibrant social venues, making it an attractive option for solo adventurers.

Lisbon claimed the third spot, supported by nearly 4,000 guided tours, a robust network of hostels, and stunning urban viewpoints. The city offers a rich array of experiences for those travelling alone.

Paris, despite a relatively lower safety score, ranked fourth due to its rapid internet speeds, extensive sightseeing tours, and abundant hostel accommodations. The city's diverse offerings continue to attract solo travellers seeking culture and adventure.

Completing the top five is Reykjavik, which, while having the highest public transport costs among the ranked cities, compensates with the highest overall safety rating. This combination of factors makes it a compelling choice for solo travellers.

On the other end of the spectrum, Oslo was ranked at the bottom of the list. The city faced challenges primarily due to its higher public transport fares and a lower density of hostels and organised tours, which can deter independent travellers.

Helen Rolph, a travel insurance expert at Quotezone, commented on the findings, stating, “Solo travelling has seen a significant surge in recent years, with more and more holidaymakers choosing to travel independently, so they can explore the world on their own terms and get out of their comfort zone.” She emphasized the importance of planning and safety precautions for those considering solo travel.

Rolph further highlighted Madrid's strengths, noting, “Our research highlighted Madrid as the top destination for solo travellers, thanks to its combination of affordable public transport, plenty of accommodation options, and fast internet access.” She also praised Prague and Lisbon for their safety and diverse experiences, making them ideal for solo adventurers.

As the trend of solo travel continues to grow, the 2026 Solo Travel Index serves as a valuable resource for individuals looking to navigate their journeys independently while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
