**Investigation Opens into Athens Clinic Following Death of Singer Giorgos Mazonakis**
An investigation has been initiated into the private clinic in Athens where renowned Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis tragically suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday. Authorities, including police, prosecutors, and representatives from the Athens Medical Association (ISA), conducted inspections of the facility to determine its compliance with medical regulations and licensing requirements.
The inquiry will focus on whether the clinic possessed the necessary licenses to operate and if the medical procedures performed there were authorized. A committee from the ISA also visited the clinic to verify the presence of equipment necessary for plasmapheresis, a medical procedure that involves the separation and removal of plasma from the blood.
ISA President George Patoulis provided insights into the clinic's operational status during an interview with Greek channel ERT. He confirmed that the clinic was licensed to function as a pathology clinic but was not authorized to conduct plasmapheresis. Furthermore, he stated that there was no record of a plasmapheresis machine in the clinic’s official documentation.
Patoulis elaborated on the nature of the clinic's operations, revealing that it was run alongside a pathologist and a non-specialist doctor who practiced preventive and holistic medicine. He emphasized that plasmapheresis is a specialized procedure that necessitates certified equipment and trained medical personnel capable of assessing patients and managing potential complications.
The investigation was prompted by the unfortunate death of Mazonakis, who was 54 years old at the time of his passing. Reports from Greek media indicate that he had visited the private stem cell clinic prior to his cardiac arrest, which occurred shortly after an intravenous catheter was inserted. Despite being transported by ambulance to Elpis Hospital within minutes, medical staff were unable to revive him despite their efforts to perform CPR.
Giorgos Mazonakis was a prominent figure in the Greek music scene, boasting a career that spanned over three decades. He began performing in clubs during the early 1990s and made his professional debut in the music industry at the age of 20. His first album was released in 1993 after signing with PolyGram, and he went on to have a successful career, performing extensively in Greece, Cyprus, and among Greek communities worldwide. His last performance in Cyprus took place at the Milk Festival in Dali on June 27, 2022.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus will remain on ensuring that the clinic adheres to legal and medical standards, particularly regarding the use of specialized medical procedures. The tragic loss of Mazonakis has raised significant concerns about patient safety and the regulatory oversight of medical facilities in Greece.
