AI SUMMARY

• What happened: Two Bulgarian boys were found dead in a locked car in Xylofagou, leading to the arrest of their father and his partner on charges of causing death by negligent and dangerous conduct. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the car's locking mechanism and potential external pressures on the family. • Why it matters: The case raises serious concerns about child safety and negligence, as well as the responsibilities of parents and guardians. The investigation's findings could have broader implications for child welfare policies and community support systems in Cyprus. • What to watch next: The court will reconvene on Thursday for further hearings, and investigators are expected to gather more evidence, including statements from local residents and the children's mother, to clarify the events leading up to the tragedy.

The two suspects, aged 30 and 38, appeared before the Dhekelia SBA court in a state of shock following a lengthy hearing. SBA police had requested four days’ detention, but judge Carl Gunsley approved only three, accepting solely the argument over flight risk. The pair are due to appear in court again on Thursday at noon. Investigators are working to establish two key questions: why the car was found locked, when evidence so far indicates the children entered through an open door, and why the boys left the family home at all. Investigators are looking into whether the saloon car’s locking mechanism may have malfunctioned, and have specialist examinations under way along with contact with a specific car dealership, according to Philenews sources. On the second question, associates of the father have alleged there were problems with a specific person in the apartment building who pressured the family over the children’s presence, and that the boys may have been afraid as a result. “Everything is under investigation,” a British Bases police source told Philenews when asked about the claim. The same source said that, based on evidence gathered so far, the case being investigated is one of causing death through negligent and dangerous conduct, which is why the father and his partner were arrested from the outset. CCTV footage, triggered by motion, recorded the boys entering the car and playing inside before the footage froze and movement stopped. The children were found unconscious at around 5:30pm by the father’s partner, who returned from work at 8am that morning and immediately alerted police. The father, a blacksmith working in Limassol, was informed shortly afterwards. According to Philenews information, evidence so far indicates the children had been locked in the vehicle for more than three hours, with investigators estimating that high temperatures developed inside the car in the heat. The father’s defence lawyer, Andriana Klaidi, objected to his detention, citing the absence of a forensic report on the actual cause of death and concerns over witness influence. During the hearing, Klaidi put it to the case’s investigating officer, Inspector Christodoulos Christodoulou of the British Bases CID, that the cause of death had not yet been established and that other causes, including poisoning, could not be ruled out. Christodoulou responded that investigators believe the offence committed is one of negligence. The 38-year-old’s lawyer, Christos Mouskos, raised no objection to her detention. Christodoulou told the court that the British Bases took on the investigation because the vehicle was parked on British Bases territory, while the apartment building where the father lived, located a short distance away, falls under Republic of Cyprus jurisdiction. Around 25 statements are expected to be taken, most from local residents, with assistance sought from Cyprus Police and from Bulgarian authorities to take a statement from the children’s mother. The boys arrived in Cyprus in mid-May, accompanied by their father, according to information provided to British Bases police.
