Two suspects, the 30-year-old father and his 38-year-old partner, remain in custody. Investigators say the pair left the two boys unsupervised after both went to work on Sunday morning. Cause of death still open, autopsy inconclusive The cause of death remains open at this stage, though asphyxiation, after the boys were locked in the car for hours, remains the leading scenario. An autopsy on the children’s bodies found that determining the cause of death will require further examination, the SBA said in a statement. The autopsy was carried out by forensic pathologist Manolis Sakelliades from Greece, who, according to information gathered, took tissue samples for histopathological testing. Testimony: children often left alone at home There is also testimony before the SBA that the two boys, who arrived in Cyprus around mid-May, were frequently left alone at home. What remains under investigation is why the children left the house and got into the car that day. CCTV footage under specialist analysis The only established fact so far is that motion-activated CCTV footage shows the two boys playing in a field before entering the car and continuing to play, at which point the footage freezes. According to information reported by Phileleftheros, the footage is being specially processed due to poor image quality, since the CCTV system uses older technology. Investigators hope technological enhancement will produce clearer conclusions. Unconfirmed rumour of a third party being investigated Investigators are also examining an unconfirmed rumour that a specific individual, who reportedly stated publicly that they “did not want children” in the building and accused the father of breaking an agreement between them, may have driven the children away, prompting them to take refuge in the car. As of yesterday afternoon, according to information gathered, investigators had not located any testimony confirming this rumour. Vehicle’s locking mechanism still unclear The vehicle, in the back seat of which the boys were found dead, remains under scrutiny. It is still unclear whether the car locked due to a fault or for another reason. Evidence gathered so far indicates the children found one door open and remained in the car for more than three hours. This aspect is expected to become clearer following examination by a specialist from the car dealership. Suspects give statements The two suspects have given statements to investigators in the presence of their lawyers.
