**JRCC ‘Ready’ to Assist in Kyrenia Ferry Rescue Operation**
Larnaca’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) has expressed its preparedness to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operation following the capsizing of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia. The incident occurred shortly after the ferry departed from the new port of Kyrenia around 12:10 PM, en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu.
According to reports from the Cyprus News Agency, the JRCC has reached out to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) to facilitate communication with the Turkish Cypriot authorities. The objective is to convey the Republic of Cyprus's readiness to provide assistance, particularly with aeronautical search and rescue resources, if necessary.
In a statement reflecting the urgency of the situation, a government official emphasized the Republic of Cyprus's commitment to aiding in emergencies. "When human lives are in danger, we contribute with every available means. The Republic of Cyprus has the means, the operational capability, and, above all, the readiness to assist immediately," the official stated.
The ferry was carrying a total of 267 individuals, comprising 259 passengers and eight crew members. As of 2:30 PM, Turkish Cypriot Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul reported that 159 individuals had been successfully rescued and brought ashore, while efforts continued to locate and rescue the remaining passengers and crew.
In a somber update, Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Basceri, confirmed that there had been some "losses of life" as a result of the ferry incident, although specific details regarding the casualties have not been disclosed.
President Nikos Christodoulides has taken a proactive approach in this crisis, instructing his chief negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, to initiate communication with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. This dialogue aims to clarify the Republic of Cyprus's willingness to provide all possible assistance in the rescue efforts.
