The Cypriot sailor entered the two medal races in first place and finished 8th and 9th, securing second place overall in the ILCA7 class behind Australia’s Matt Wearn, who took gold. Britain’s Michael Beckett finished third. It is the second consecutive year the Limassol Nautical Club sailor has medalled at the Los Angeles Grand Slam. He finished third last year, though that edition was held at a different venue, Long Beach. The result continues a strong 2026 for Kontides. In May, he was crowned European Champion in Croatia for the third time in his career, and in June he returned to world number one in the ILCA7 (Laser) world rankings for the first time in 11 months, the sixth time he has held the top spot in his career. The two-time Olympic silver medallist’s next major target is the World Championship in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, from August 23-30, held in the same bay where he won silver in a coach regatta in late June. Kontides said he was happy with his performance throughout the week and had been very consistent, though things did not go entirely to plan on the final day. He said he was pleased with second place, and would now rest at home before preparing for the World Championship in Ireland at the end of August. Kontides’ Super Grand Sponsor is Freedom24, with Allwyn as his long-term major sponsor. He is also sponsored by Ayia Napa Marina and Petrolina. His supporters include Alassia NewShips Management, the Leventis Foundation, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, VITA Group and Hartmann Holdings. NUTRICA, a supplement range developed from two decades of experience by Kontides and his team, accompanies him on every trip.
