**Large Tobacco Haul Seized at Deryneia Crossing**
Deryneia, Cyprus – In a significant operation on Wednesday, customs officers at the Deryneia crossing point seized a large quantity of tobacco products during routine inspections. The operation resulted in the confiscation of both cigarettes and hookah tobacco, highlighting ongoing efforts to enforce regulations regarding the sale and distribution of tobacco in the region.
The first incident involved a vehicle driven by a 46-year-old Hungarian national. Customs officers conducted a routine check and discovered 59 boxes, each containing 200 cigarettes. Notably, the cigarettes were found to be non-compliant with local regulations. They lacked the necessary health warnings in both Greek and Turkish, as well as essential security markings and traceability codes. This indicated that the products had not been legally cleared for duty in Cyprus.
As a result of the findings, customs officials impounded both the tobacco products and the vehicle. The driver was arrested but was later released after agreeing to pay an out-of-court fine of €3,600. Additionally, he was required to pay €400 for the return of his vehicle.
Later on the same day, customs officers encountered a Turkish Cypriot taxi carrying an Israeli passenger en route to Larnaca Airport. Upon inspecting the passenger's luggage, officers discovered four one-kilogram packages of hookah tobacco. Similar to the earlier case, the hookah tobacco was found to lack the required markings, leading to further enforcement actions.
The Israeli passenger was also released after paying an out-of-court fine of €1,400 for the possession of the unmarked tobacco products.
These incidents underscore the vigilance of customs officials in monitoring and regulating the movement of tobacco products across the Deryneia crossing.
