**Limassol Wine Festival Gets Underway**
The 2026 Limassol Wine Festival commenced on Saturday night at the municipal gardens, marking the beginning of a nine-day celebration of Cyprus' rich winemaking heritage. The festival is scheduled to run until October 4, drawing attention from locals and visitors alike.
Transport Minister Evie Tsolaki had the honor of officially opening the festival, which features the iconic giant figure of the traditional Cypriot winegrower, known as the vrakas. The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including House President Annita Demetriou, ambassadors, members of parliament, local officials, and numerous members of the public.
During her address, Tsolaki highlighted the festival's historical significance, noting that it has been celebrated for 65 years since its inception by the late Kleanthis Christoforou. She acknowledged the early support from major wine producers such as Etko, Loel, Keo, and Sodap, which helped establish the festival as a key event in Cyprus' cultural calendar. Today, Cyprus boasts over 100 smaller wineries, reflecting the island's vibrant and diverse wine industry.
Tsolaki emphasized the importance of supporting local wine producers and rural communities, particularly in light of the vineyard replanting initiative introduced after the devastating wildfires that affected the island last year. She pointed out that these replanted vineyards could also serve as fire protection zones, contributing to environmental sustainability.
Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis praised the festival as one of Cyprus' longest-running and most beloved events, celebrating the island's hospitality and the traditions of Limassol. He noted that the festival has historically united people of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and preserving important cultural practices.
Throughout the festival, attendees can look forward to a diverse program of activities. The municipal gardens will host 14 major concerts, theatrical performances, and appearances by local folk groups. Additionally, there will be activities designed for children, as well as various art and photography exhibitions, making the event appealing to families and art enthusiasts.
