**Liverpool’s New Defence Requires Time to Gel, Says Van Dijk**
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has acknowledged that the club's newly restructured defence will need time to develop cohesion. This comes in light of significant changes to the backline, with the recent departures of Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, alongside Joe Gomez's muscle injury sustained during the team's opening pre-season match.
The Merseyside club has made strategic moves to bolster their defensive options, signing Uruguay international Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona. Additionally, French defender Jeremy Jacquet, who was signed in February, has joined the squad. Both players made their appearances in a recent friendly match against Italian club Como, where Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory, with Jacquet contributing a goal.
In discussing the integration of new players into the squad, Van Dijk emphasized the importance of game experience in building strong partnerships on the field. He stated, “By playing games. I won’t say it’s the only way, but games are totally different than training.” Van Dijk noted the varying language skills of his new teammates, mentioning that “Jeremy’s English is, I would say, a bit better than Ronald,” but he remains confident in their collective abilities as footballers to adapt and communicate effectively during matches.
The veteran defender highlighted that establishing a solid defensive connection is a process that typically requires time, which he considers a normal aspect of team dynamics. “It’s pretty clear that you need to form a connection together and take a bit of time. But it’s, in my opinion, absolutely normal. But hopefully, we can get that going as quickly as possible,” Van Dijk added.
As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming Premier League season, they will kick off their campaign against Newcastle United on August 23. Following a fifth-place finish in the previous season, the club is keen to improve their standing and hopes that the new defensive lineup will quickly find its rhythm on the pitch.
The integration of Araujo and Jacquet, alongside the remaining squad members, will be pivotal as Liverpool aims to reclaim its status among the top teams in the league. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the revamped backline performs in the early stages of the season.
