The meeting takes place at the Agios Athanasios Cultural Centre and is centred on prioritising projects and interventions that can help decongest the road network. The government is attending with a specific plan, putting two categories of road projects on the table, graded by priority and implementation timeframe. The first covers immediate, short and medium-term interventions, including targeted traffic regulations, minor improvements at critical junctions, the construction and upgrading of roundabouts, and the rollout of smart traffic management systems such as the UTC system. The total budget for the proposed road and urban planning projects for Limassol stands at 493 million euros. The largest share is directed towards major arterial interventions and bypasses, including the Limassol–Saittas motorway (80 million euros), the second parallel road between Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios (24 million euros), and the Northern Bypass section between Ypsonas and Polemidia (60 million euros). Projects already at the stage of direct implementation or tendering, including the roundabout at the junction of Agios Athanasios and Anoikodomiseos avenues and the new motorway exit at Pyrgos Limassol (the EAC exit), represent only the first phase of a wider investment plan aimed at permanently decongesting the city. These interventions aim to provide immediate relief to the city’s most burdened road arteries. The table also includes projects requiring more time, such as major urban planning and road infrastructure works, avenue widening, new connecting roads and grade-separated junctions, which are still at the study or design stage and require a longer timeframe to complete while ensuring the city’s sustainable development over time. Beyond the projects already planned, Vafeades is expected to formally ask municipal authorities during the meeting to submit their own supplementary proposals. The initiative aims to jointly shape a holistic, long-term plan for the entire Limassol district for the coming years, ensuring that each municipality’s local needs are incorporated into national infrastructure planning. Ministry sources said the government fully recognises the serious traffic problems facing Limassol as a result of the city’s rapid residential and commercial growth.
