**Mavroyiannis Claims Polls Show Him Leading Ahead of 2028 Presidential Election**
Former presidential candidate Andreas Mavroyiannis announced on Friday that recent polling data indicates he is currently in a leading position for the upcoming 2028 presidential election in Cyprus. However, he has stated that he will wait until the end of the year to make a final decision regarding a potential candidacy.
In an interview with Omega TV, Mavroyiannis mentioned that he is aware of only one official poll, which he claims was leaked by the Democratic Rally party (Disy). In addition to this, he has received information from four other polls, all suggesting that he is leading among potential candidates. He referred to these findings as "food for thought" and expressed that they, along with the daily support he feels from the public, indicate a growing momentum around his name.
Mavroyiannis emphasized the importance of consulting with his associates and supporters from his previous campaign before making any announcements. "It will be preceded by a discussion with associates and with people who had supported my previous effort," he said, confirming that he and his team aim to reach a decision by the end of the year.
Discussing his relationship with the left-wing party Akel, Mavroyiannis described his ties with Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou as "excellent." The two reportedly hold regular informal meetings to discuss party matters. He acknowledged the complexity of working within a large political party like Akel, stating, "It is not right for it to appear that I am exerting pressure."
When asked about rumors suggesting that the party Alma had vetoed his candidacy, Mavroyiannis stated he could not confirm such claims. "I was told something of a similar vein, that Alma has vetoed my candidacy. I don’t know," he remarked, while maintaining an openness to collaboration with various political forces in the country. "Why not? I was and am independent. All the forces of the country, with the exception of the far right, are welcome," he added.
Mavroyiannis also addressed his previous encounters with former Disy leader Averof Neophytou. He rejected the notion that he would be an easy opponent in a potential rematch, praising Neophytou as a "formidable opponent" and recalling their past televised debates as being of "very high standard."
As the political landscape in Cyprus continues to evolve, Mavroyiannis's statements reflect a strategic approach as he weighs his options for the future.
