Speaking on Omega’s “Enimerosi Tora,” Mavroyiannis described his relationship with AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou as excellent, saying he would welcome the party’s support without pressuring it, and said he was open to working with all political forces except the far right. “Three or four polls put me in first place” Mavroyiannis said people had sent him a range of different polls, but that the only official poll he was aware of was the one leaked by DISY. He said three or four further polls had reached him showing him in first place. He described these findings as “food for thought,” saying that, combined with the impression he gets from daily contact with the public, they create a sense of momentum around a possible candidacy. He said the decision on a new candidacy isn’t his alone to make: it will follow discussion and consultation with his associates and with those who backed his previous election campaign, and that he and his associates aim to reach a final decision before the end of 2026. “Excellent relationship” with Stefanou Mavroyiannis discussed his relationship with AKEL and its general secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, following a recent informal lunch between the two. He said the meeting didn’t touch on the presidential election, focusing instead on broader issues, and described his relationship with Stefanou as “excellent,” noting that such meetings have been a regular practice between them for some time. He was notably careful to avoid giving the impression that he is trying to influence AKEL’s leadership. “We’re talking about a big party with its own processes and its own people. It wouldn’t be right for it to look like I’m putting pressure on them,” he said. He said he would like AKEL’s support, but was clear he does not want to create any impression that he is pressuring the party’s leadership or its bodies. “All forces except the far right are welcome” Mavroyiannis also addressed comments from Odysseas Michaelides and his party, ALMA, suggesting he has aligned himself with a specific party, as well as reports of an ALMA “veto” on a potential candidacy of his. “I was told something worse, that ALMA has vetoed my candidacy. I don’t know,” he said. He made clear, however, that he could work with ALMA. “Why not? I was independent, and I still am. Every political force in this country, except the far right, is welcome,” he said. He noted that it was still too early for final decisions, adding that every political force is making its own tactical moves, and that now wasn’t the right moment for this kind of discussion, saying “it’s still very early.” “Averof is an excellent opponent” Mavroyiannis also spoke about Averof Neophytou, whom he said he has met once or twice. He repeated that he considers the former DISY leader an “excellent opponent.” Asked whether he sees Neophytou as an easy opponent, he was categorical: “Far from it.” Speaking about the televised debates the two held during their previous electoral contest, he said they were “of a very high standard.” “That’s why I say he was a very good opponent,” he said.
