**Ministry Delighted with EU’s ‘Excellent Water Quality’ Listing for Cyprus**
The Ministry of Agriculture in Cyprus expressed satisfaction on Wednesday following the European Commission's announcement that Cyprus has achieved a top ranking for its bathing water quality. All 123 monitored bathing sites on the island received the highest rating of "excellent" in the EU's annual bathing water report for 2025.
The ministry emphasized that this recognition reflects the effectiveness of the environmental protection measures implemented across the country. "The quality of bathing water is inextricably linked to public health and the protection of the marine environment," the ministry stated, underscoring the importance of maintaining high water quality standards.
This achievement is particularly significant for Cyprus, as the tourism industry heavily relies on the reputation of the island's beaches. The ministry noted that the excellent water quality results not only enhance the image of Cyprus as a destination with clean and safe beaches but also contribute positively to the economy. "Swimming is one of the most popular and important forms of recreation in Europe," it added, highlighting the role of quality bathing waters in attracting visitors.
The ministry attributed this success to the collaborative efforts of various governmental bodies, including the Department of Environment, health services, public health services, the General State Chemical Laboratory, and local government authorities. This teamwork has ensured that Cyprus meets the strict specifications set forth by the European directive on the management of bathing water quality.
In comparison to other EU countries, Cyprus stands out, joining Austria, Bulgaria, and Greece, where over 95 percent of bathing waters were classified as excellent. However, Cyprus achieved a remarkable 100 percent rating, a testament to the island's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable management of its natural resources.
The ministry reiterated that Cyprus remains dedicated to maintaining high-quality bathing waters for both residents and visitors, ensuring that the island continues to be a safe and attractive destination for recreational activities.
