The details of the crime reveal a calculated plot targeting the young international student, who had only arrived in Cyprus a few months ago to study at a private university in Larnaca. Emon had been missing since 18:30 on 12 June, after telling his flatmates he was travelling to Kofinou for his first day of work. His family immediately suspected foul play and reported a kidnapping after receiving ransom demands and a single location pin from the student’s mobile phone. However, the suspect’s confession on Sunday completely upended the abduction theory. According to police sources, the suspect admitted to luring Emon from his residence in Oroklini to a secluded area in Kofinou, where he murdered him that same evening by stabbing him repeatedly in the neck and back. He then covered the victim’s body with grass and weeds, stole his mobile phone, and orchestrated a fraudulent kidnapping plot to extort money from Emon’s family. On Sunday afternoon, the suspect led Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detectives to a site located approximately 500 metres from the Kofinou migrant reception centre and a local slaughterhouse, where he had concealed the remains. He further uncovered the murder weapon and a spot where he had hidden the victim’s personal belongings.Forensic teams recovered the body in an advanced stage of decomposition. Initial examinations revealed that, in addition to the severe knife wounds, the 22-year-old student bore clear signs of strangulation.A premeditated trapDuring his interrogation, the suspect claimed he met Emon on a bus just five days prior to the murder, where the victim allegedly said something that caused him deep offence. In response, the suspect fabricated a job offer at a local factory to lure Emon into a fatal trap.Despite the suspect’s claims of personal grievance, authorities are heavily pursuing a financial angle. Following the murder, digital ransom messages circulated on social media, demanding €10,000 on Sunday and an additional €25,000 on Monday, alongside threats that the family would “never see his face again” if law enforcement intervened. The head of Larnaca CID, Giorgos Charalambous, confirmed that, prima facie, the overarching motive for the crime is assessed to be financial, as investigators continue to verify the exact timeline and digital trail of the extortion messages.
