Police were out in force focusing in central urban areas, with intensified operations over the past few weeks aimed at preventing criminal acts, maintaining public order and boosting a sense of security, as authorities have said. Seventeen people were arrested for a number of crimes, including possession of controlled substances, breaking and entering tools, knife possession, illegally residing in the Republic and pending traffic tickets. Almost 556 individuals in 500 vehicles were flagged down during the night, with police searching 47 properties and charging four individuals with various offences. 256 drivers have been charged over a host of traffic violations, as 16 cars were confiscated. More than 70 were found to be speeding, four were drunk and a further four tested positive in a narc test. Authorities will be stepping up checks in urban areas, but mainly on the highways running to and from coastal and mountainous regions over the next three days, as thousands will be leaving the cities and flocking to resorts as they celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the biggest religious holiday after Easter.
