**Motorcyclists Stage Symbolic Crossing Point Closure in Tribute to Isaac and Solomou**
On Friday, members of the Isaac-Solomou Memorial Initiative organized a symbolic closure of the Astromeritis-Zodia crossing point in Cyprus, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the deaths of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou. The event aimed to honor the memory of the two men who lost their lives during protests in the mid-1990s, a period marked by heightened tensions between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.
The motorcycle march commenced at 3:15 PM, with participants distributing leaflets to raise awareness about the significance of the commemoration. Following the march, the symbolic closure of the crossing point served as a poignant reminder of the events that transpired three decades ago and the ongoing impact of those events on the island's history.
Tassos Isaac was killed on August 11, 1996, during a protest by Greek Cypriots in the buffer zone. The demonstration was met with a counter-protest from Turkish Cypriots, which escalated into violence. According to a United Nations report, members of the Grey Wolves, a Turkish nationalist group, also joined the confrontation. Isaac became ensnared in barbed wire during the chaos and was subsequently beaten to death by individuals from the opposing side.
Just three days later, Solomos Solomou was shot and killed while attempting to remove a Turkish flag from a military post during a demonstration following Isaac's funeral. He had separated himself from the crowd and climbed a flagpole, where he was fatally shot by a Turkish soldier. Both incidents highlighted the deep-seated divisions and tensions that have persisted in Cyprus since the island's division in 1974.
The commemorative events will continue with a central gathering scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at 8 PM in Paralimni. The initiative aims to not only remember Isaac and Solomou but also to promote dialogue and understanding between the communities on the island.
As the motorcycle march concluded, participants reflected on the significance of the day, emphasizing the need for continued remembrance and recognition of the past as a means of fostering peace and reconciliation in Cyprus.
