**Muskita Aluminium Industries Backs Conservation Efforts for Endangered Blackchin Guitarfish in Cyprus**
Muskita Aluminium Industries has announced its support for a significant marine conservation initiative aimed at protecting the critically endangered Blackchin Guitarfish (Glaucostegus cemiculus) in Cyprus. The project, titled “Mark, Measure, Conserve: Empowering Fishers to Monitor the Critically Endangered Blackchin Guitarfish in Cyprus,” began in June 2026 and is being executed by the Marine and Environmental Research (MER) Lab with assistance from the Cyprus Environment Foundation (CEF).
This initiative is part of Muskita's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program and seeks to enhance scientific understanding of one of the Mediterranean’s most threatened marine species while actively involving local fishers in conservation efforts. The project focuses on data collection, monitoring, tagging, and awareness-raising activities, all aimed at strengthening protection measures for the Blackchin Guitarfish and contributing to its long-term survival in Cypriot waters.
The Blackchin Guitarfish has seen significant population declines across its range and is currently classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Despite this alarming status, there remains a substantial lack of knowledge regarding its presence, movements, and population trends in Cyprus, underscoring the need for targeted monitoring efforts.
Anna Mouskis, Marketing Manager at Muskita Aluminium Industries, expressed pride in the company's involvement in this important project. “This is the first year that Muskita is supporting this important project, and we are proud to stand behind an initiative focused on the protection of a critically endangered species,” she stated. “We believe that businesses have an important role to play in safeguarding our natural heritage, and we are committed to supporting meaningful projects that create a positive and lasting impact on the environment.”
As the first company in Cyprus to adopt and support a dedicated conservation project for the Blackchin Guitarfish, Muskita is not only raising awareness about the species' plight but is also directly contributing to scientific research and conservation action. This initiative aligns with Muskita’s long-standing commitment to responsible business practices and environmental stewardship.
Through its collaboration with leading conservation organizations, Muskita aims to inspire greater awareness and collective action towards the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems and the species that depend on them. The company continues to invest in projects that protect biodiversity, strengthen local communities, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Cyprus.
The Cyprus Environment Foundation (CEF), established in 2021, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the natural beauty, biodiversity, and ecosystems of Cyprus. As part of the Conservation Collective's global network, CEF supports various initiatives aimed at fostering environmental sustainability.
Muskita Aluminium Industries, a leading industrial company in Cyprus, is recognized for its innovative aluminium systems and commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its CSR initiatives, the company actively supports projects that promote education, community wellbeing, and the preservation of Cyprus’ natural heritage.
As the conservation project progresses, it is anticipated that the collaboration between Muskita, MER Lab, and CEF will yield valuable insights into the Blackchin Guitarfish population, ultimately aiding in the development of effective conservation strategies. The initiative serves as a vital step towards ensuring the survival of this endangered species and highlights the importance of corporate involvement in environmental conservation efforts.
