**National Bank of Greece Completes €11.8 Million Share Buyback**
The National Bank of Greece (NBG) has announced the successful acquisition of 727,285 of its own common shares, a move that reflects the bank's ongoing commitment to enhancing shareholder value. The shares were purchased on Euronext Athens between August 10 and August 17, 2026, at a weighted average price of €16.3083 per share, culminating in a total expenditure of €11,860,757.13.
This buyback initiative is part of a broader strategy approved during the bank's annual general meeting of shareholders held on April 30, 2026. The decision to initiate the share repurchase program was further supported by a subsequent announcement made on June 12, 2026, which outlined the launch of the first tranche of the buyback.
The European Central Bank’s (ECB) Single Supervisory Mechanism granted regulatory approval for this initiative on June 8, 2026, allowing NBG to proceed with its plans. The bank had previously disclosed a series of buyback transactions on several dates, including June 22, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 24, August 3, and August 10, 2026, indicating a consistent approach to share repurchases over the past months.
As a result of these recent transactions, the National Bank of Greece now holds a total of 24,601,002 treasury shares, which represents approximately 2.69 percent of the bank's total share capital. This significant holding underscores the bank's strategy to optimize its capital structure and return value to its shareholders.
In line with the resolutions passed during the shareholders’ meeting, the bank plans to cancel the repurchased shares within the stipulated legal timeframe, further reducing the number of outstanding shares and potentially enhancing the value of the remaining shares.
The share buyback program is seen as a positive signal to the market, demonstrating the bank's confidence in its financial health and future prospects. It also aligns with common practices among financial institutions aiming to bolster shareholder returns during periods of strong performance.
The National Bank of Greece continues to navigate the complexities of the financial landscape while implementing strategies designed to enhance its market position and shareholder value.
