Christodoulou Makri stepped straight into a difficult situation, with the state of the party leaving no room even for a basic period of adjustment. Achieving this, she said, requires unity in practice: EDEK’s doors must be open to everyone who shares its principles, values and political identity, and the party needs every person willing to contribute, every official, member and supporter who believes EDEK can and should be a strong political and social force. She repeated the party’s intention to move forward while honouring its history, saying EDEK respects the struggles, sacrifices and contributions of everyone who served the party and the country, and that the legacy of Vasos Lyssarides is both a responsibility for the present and a guide for the future. She concluded that EDEK was not created to settle for stagnation or a limited role, but to fight, campaign, defend its principles and offer real solutions to society. Party congress and financial recovery The new leader’s first major milestone will be the party’s upcoming Statutory Congress, scheduled for late October, at which significant decisions are expected on the party’s future direction ahead of the electoral congress planned for December. A major challenge will be managing EDEK’s financial difficulties, since the party has received no state funding after losing its seats in Parliament. Protovoulia Agona: “We feel vindicated” In a statement, the EDEK faction Protovoulia Agona (Struggle Initiative) said Monday was not a day for celebration or compliments, but a day of responsibility, a day to regroup and look ahead. The group said “the only ‘well done’ belongs to EDEK’s proud people,” referring to the thousands of party members who spoke out when given the chance and sent a strong message to those it said had damaged the party and deliberately driven it to the brink. It said collective dignity, transparency and loyalty to Vasos Lyssarides’s patriotic and socialist principles had prevailed over tactics of intimidation, expulsions and closed-door decision-making. The group said it felt vindicated and proud that, through campaigning, democratic process and legal means, it had succeeded in electing its own candidate to EDEK’s presidency, describing Sofia’s rise to the leadership as proof that the party belongs to its grassroots rather than to internal cliques, power bases or personal agendas. The group said Sofia had been present throughout the effort, had answered the moment’s call, and had taken on the responsibility to stand at the front when doing so required courage, resolve and a clear position.
