**New Square and Parking Facility Inaugurated in Gourri**
In a significant step towards revitalizing rural communities, a new village square and semi-underground car park were inaugurated in the Troodos mountain village of Gourri on Sunday. The €1.8 million project, co-financed through European and national funds, aims to enhance the village's infrastructure and create a modern public space for both residents and visitors.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, who represented President Nikos Christodoulides. In his address, Ioannou emphasized that the redevelopment was designed to respect the traditional character of Gourri while integrating modern standards of accessibility, sustainability, and functionality. He noted that the project is part of a broader government initiative to revitalize rural and mountainous areas across Cyprus.
"The new square is expected to become a focal point for community life," Ioannou stated, highlighting its potential as a gathering place for cultural activities and local events. He also mentioned the anticipated operation of a farmers' market in the square, which is expected to support local producers and stimulate economic activity within the village.
The inauguration of the new square and parking facility is part of a series of development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for local residents and attracting more visitors to the region. The government has been actively working on several other initiatives, including a €1.5 million redevelopment of the village center in Farmakas and a €1.34 million regeneration project in Ayios Epiphanios, which is expected to be completed in September. Additionally, plans are underway for a €1.9 million redevelopment project in Kampi village.
Ioannou also mentioned the recent completion of new community buildings in Kalo Chorio and Klirou, a project that cost €405,000, with 70 percent of the funding provided by the state. These projects are part of the government's wider strategy to strengthen the development prospects of rural areas, ensuring that communities remain viable and attractive places to live.
The overarching goal, according to Ioannou, is to create opportunities for residents, particularly younger individuals, to stay in their communities and build their futures locally. By investing in infrastructure and public spaces, the government aims to foster a sense of community and improve the overall quality of life in rural areas.
