A highly anticipated musical theatre tribute celebrating the life of legendary Cretan lyra player and singer Nikos Xylouris, known as the "Archangel of Crete," is set to take place in Cyprus this September. This production, which has already garnered significant attention with a sold-out run in Athens, will feature performances in multiple locations across the island.
The tribute marks the 90th anniversary of Xylouris's birth and will be staged at three venues: the Limassol Garden Theatre on September 11, the Strovolos Municipal Theatre on September 12 and 13 as part of the municipality's 10th Theatre Festival, and the Pattichio Amphitheatre in Larnaca on September 14.
The production, titled "Nikos Xylouris, the Archangel of Crete," narrates the remarkable journey of Xylouris, from his childhood in Anogeia during the Nazi occupation to his flourishing career in the music clubs of 1970s Athens, culminating in his untimely death at the age of 44. The show is written by Zacharenia Petraki and directed by Nikorestis Chaniotakis, who serves as the artistic director of the Cretan Municipal and Regional Theatre (DIPETHE).
Drawing on years of research and archival materials, the performance incorporates live music, previously unseen photographs, and rare audio recordings. The narration is enriched by the personal recollections of Ourania Xylouri, Xylouris's life partner, who played a significant role in shaping the script.

Additional vocal contributions will come from Giannis Mathes, while Cretan music and vocals will be performed by Mathios and Rafail Damoulakis.
The production's creative team also features Manolis Pantelidakis as the set designer, Ioanna Kalavrou for costumes, and Elena Gerodimou for choreography. The dramaturgy consultant for the show is Ourania Xylouri, ensuring that the narrative remains authentic to Xylouris's life and legacy.
