**Nine Appear in Court Over Deadly Kyrenia Ferry Accident**
Nine individuals were presented in court on Monday following their arrest in connection with a tragic ferry sinking that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia on Sunday. The incident has resulted in the confirmed deaths of eight people, while 18 others remain unaccounted for.
The group brought before the Turkish Cypriot Kyrenia district court included the ferry's captain, seven crew members, and a shareholder of the operating company, Filo Denizcilik. The court proceedings were presided over by Judge Hazal Hacimulla, who announced that the session would be adjourned until 11:30 PM. During the proceedings, it was revealed that arrest warrants had been issued for an additional 16 individuals connected to the ferry's operation.
The ferry, which was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, capsized shortly after departing from the new port of Kyrenia at approximately 12:10 PM. It was en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu when the accident occurred, prompting immediate search and rescue operations.
In response to the tragedy, Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel expressed his condolences and commitment to a thorough investigation. He stated, “Every aspect of this incident will be investigated” and emphasized that “even the slightest negligence will be uncovered.” Ustel acknowledged the profound grief felt by the community and reassured the public that the state would fulfill its duty in uncovering the truth behind the incident.
As search-and-rescue efforts continued into Monday morning, both boats and helicopters were deployed to the area to assist in locating the missing individuals. The presence of helicopters in the vicinity of Kyrenia has led to adjustments in flight patterns at Ercan (Tymbou) airport, with passenger flights being rerouted over the southern part of Nicosia instead of their usual path over Kyrenia towards Turkey. This change has allowed residents in the southern half of the capital to witness and hear low-flying aircraft during the ongoing rescue operations.
The investigation into the ferry disaster is ongoing, with authorities focusing on both the operational aspects of the ferry and the circumstances surrounding its sinking.
