**North Cyprus to Launch E-Visa System for Armenian, Nigerian, and Syrian Citizens**
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is set to implement an e-visa system for citizens of Armenia, Nigeria, and Syria, as announced by ‘Prime Minister’ Unal Ustel. This new initiative will replace the existing visa process, which currently requires individuals from these countries to apply for a full visa in advance of their visit to the northern part of the island.
Ustel emphasized the importance of updating the legal framework and enhancing the technical infrastructure to facilitate this transition. He stated, “We are updating our legal framework, strengthening our technical infrastructure, addressing personnel shortages in our institutions, and integrating the opportunities offered by technology into our security system.” This shift aims to streamline the entry process while ensuring that the TRNC maintains a comprehensive understanding of who is entering the territory.
Under the forthcoming e-visa system, the Turkish Cypriot authorities will conduct preliminary reviews of visa applications through the migration department. Ustel noted that security assessments and eligibility checks will begin even before travelers arrive in the country. “Our state must know who is coming to the TRNC, for what purpose, when, and under what status,” he explained. This proactive approach aims to enhance security while allowing for a more efficient entry process.
Currently, citizens of Armenia, Nigeria, and Syria are required to obtain a full visa from Turkish Cypriot representative offices abroad, with the exception of offices located in Geneva and Strasbourg. In contrast, travelers from other countries can enter Northern Cyprus as tourists without needing a visa. The introduction of the e-visa system will eliminate the existing consular visa application process for these three nations.
Ustel highlighted the ruling coalition's commitment to opening Northern Cyprus to the world in a controlled and secure manner. “Our country’s doors will be open to the world, but our state will know who enters through these doors, why, and under what status,” he affirmed. This statement reflects a balance between promoting tourism and maintaining national security.
