**Swimmer Kalia Antoniou Secures Cyprus’ First Gold Medal at 2026 Mediterranean Games**
Cyprus has celebrated a significant achievement at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, as swimmer Kalia Antoniou clinched the island's first gold medal of the event on Monday night. Antoniou triumphed in the 100m freestyle final, marking her second consecutive victory in this event, having previously won gold in the same category during the 2022 Mediterranean Games.
Antoniou's winning time of 54.6 seconds narrowly edged out Italy’s Chiara Tarantino, who finished with a silver medal time of 54.67 seconds, just 0.07 seconds behind. Spain’s Ainho Campabadal Amezcua secured the bronze medal with a time of 55.4 seconds.
Reflecting on her performance, Antoniou expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I had two goals, to achieve a personal best and to win the gold medal. I managed to achieve one and I am very happy and proud of my first gold [of the games] for Cyprus.” She also shared her anticipation for her next event, the 50m freestyle, scheduled for the following day.
Antoniou's victory is particularly noteworthy as it continues Cyprus' impressive streak of securing at least one gold medal at every Mediterranean Games since 2000. The last time Cyprus did not win a gold medal was during the 1997 Games held in Bari, Italy.
Looking ahead, Antoniou is set to compete again on Tuesday morning in the 50m freestyle. Her brother, Nikolas Antoniou, and fellow swimmer Andrew Marcus Laghoutis will also participate in the men's 50m freestyle event later in the day. Additionally, Maria Erokhina will represent Cyprus in the women's 200m individual medley final.
The excitement for Cyprus extends beyond swimming, as the men’s handball team prepares to face Tunisia on Tuesday evening. The team is looking to recover from a 33-24 loss to Algeria in their opening match on Sunday.
In gymnastics, Maria Sokolova and Maria Avgousti will take to the floor, while padel players Sergios Kyratzis and Maria Siopacha are set to compete against Portugal in the mixed doubles quarterfinal. Trap shooters Yiannis Ailiotis and Andreas Makri will also be in action, contributing to Cyprus' diverse representation in the Games.
As the Mediterranean Games continue, the Cypriot delegation remains hopeful for further successes across various sports, building on the momentum generated by Antoniou's outstanding performance.
