**Ocon Declares Himself a ‘Free Agent’ Amid Speculation Over F1 Future**
Baku, Azerbaijan – French Formula One driver Esteban Ocon announced on Wednesday that he is officially a free agent for the 2024 season, revealing that he is in discussions with multiple teams regarding his future in the sport. This declaration comes as speculation mounts about whether he will continue with his current team, Haas.
Speaking to reporters at the Baku street circuit ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday, Ocon stated, “At the moment I’m definitely a free agent for next year.” He acknowledged that there are ongoing discussions about his future, but emphasized that some factors are beyond his control. “There are things in discussion that are out of my control,” he added. “I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes.”
When asked if he is in talks with other teams, Ocon confirmed, “Of course, yeah,” but remained non-committal about the possibility of staying with Haas, saying, “Let’s see.”
Ocon, who is 30 years old, joined Haas last year, forming a new lineup alongside British driver Oliver Bearman, a Ferrari junior. In the current season, Ocon has scored three points, placing him 18th out of 23 drivers in the overall standings, while Bearman has accumulated 18 points, ranking 13th. Ocon’s most recent points finish came with a ninth-place result in Monaco, making him the most recent points scorer for Haas, which has struggled to maintain momentum since then.
Earlier this year, there were rumors regarding a potential rift between Ocon and Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, although Ocon dismissed these claims in May, calling them “fabricated with no foundation.” Despite the challenges, he defended his performance this season, stating, “My performance hasn’t been an issue this year. I’ve performed every time I had the car.” He pointed out that he was the last driver to score points in Monaco and nearly scored in the last race in Madrid.
As the season progresses, Haas has yet to confirm its driver lineup for 2027, leading to further speculation about Ocon’s position. Multiple reports have suggested that Brazilian driver Rafael Camara, who is currently second in the Formula 2 standings and backed by Ferrari, could be a frontrunner to replace Ocon.
