A significant astronomical discovery has emerged from the lunar surface, with scientists announcing the identification of the largest newly formed crater in the solar system. This remarkable finding, described as a once-in-a-century impact event, was published in a study in *Science Advances* on Wednesday.
The newly discovered crater, named McGetchin in honor of pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, measures an impressive 222 meters (728 feet) in diameter and reaches a depth of 43 meters. The crater was detected using images captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). Researcher Robert Wagner first identified the crater during a routine examination of images from LROC’s Wide-Angle Camera in October 2025. Subsequent high-resolution observations were conducted over the following months to accurately measure the crater and assess the surrounding terrain.
NASA reports that the McGetchin crater formed between April 11 and May 22, 2024, following the impact of a comet or asteroid approximately the size of a three- to six-story building. The collision resulted in debris being scattered across the surrounding area and created a notable "cold spot" measuring about seven kilometers (four miles) wide. This cold spot exhibits nighttime temperatures that can be up to nine degrees Celsius (16 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than those in adjacent regions.
Researchers believe that the impact may have altered the lunar regolith, the layer of loose rock and dust covering the Moon's surface. The collision appears to have "fluffed up" the regolith, reducing its density and affecting its ability to retain heat.
The discovery of McGetchin crater is particularly significant as it surpasses previous records for recent lunar impacts. Prior to this finding, the largest contemporary impact crater identified on the Moon measured approximately 70 meters across, highlighting the scale of this new crater.
The timing of this discovery coincides with a renewed global interest in lunar exploration. The Moon is becoming an increasingly vital focal point for international space endeavors. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized in a July interview with CBS News that the United States is actively engaged in a "space race" with China. NASA's Artemis program aims for its first crewed lunar landing since the Apollo missions by 2028, with aspirations to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon.
In parallel, Russia and China have announced plans to collaborate on the development of the International Lunar Research Station, with intentions to deploy a power station on the Moon within the next decade. During a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Moscow in May, the two nations signed an agreement to construct a nuclear power plant on the Moon, which will provide energy for the planned research station, anticipated to become operational in the mid-2030s.
