**Operation Guardian Nets 12 Arrests in First Month of Summer Beach Crackdown**
In a bid to enhance safety and security at popular beach destinations, the British bases police have reported significant outcomes from their summer policing initiative, Operation Guardian. Launched on May 30 and set to continue until the end of August, the operation has resulted in 12 arrests within its first four weeks, highlighting its proactive approach to maintaining order at Lady’s Mile and Curium beaches.
The initiative was introduced to address the increased foot traffic during the summer months, with both beaches attracting over 7,000 visitors each weekend. Chief Inspector Tony Demetriou emphasized the operation's positive impact, stating, "Operation Guardian has commenced very positively and is already demonstrating a positive impact. Our proactive approach has contributed to maintaining safety across the beaches while also providing visible reassurance to the large number of visitors."
Among the arrests made, one notable incident involved a 34-year-old Bulgarian national who was stopped under suspicion of driving while impaired by drugs. Upon searching his vehicle, officers discovered a small quantity of drugs, believed to be for personal use, alongside several prohibited weapons, including pointed kitchen knives, a scythe, and a wooden baton. This individual has since been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
In addition to the arrests, the operation has led to the issuance of 20 reports for traffic offences and 60 written cautions related to both traffic and powerboat violations. Authorities have also taken action against two individuals for operating businesses without the necessary licenses, referring them to the Akrotiri area office for further action.
The SBA police marine unit has been actively involved in ensuring compliance with safety regulations, conducting checks on 113 boats and jet skis. These measures are part of a broader strategy to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour, improve road safety, and ensure adherence to maritime and environmental legislation.
The increased police presence, which includes both specialist and frontline officers, aims to deter illegal activities and provide reassurance to beachgoers. The operation not only focuses on law enforcement but also encourages public engagement, urging individuals to report any suspicious activities and to secure their vehicles.
As the summer season progresses, Operation Guardian is expected to continue its efforts in promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors to Lady’s Mile and Curium beaches. The ongoing commitment from the British bases police reflects a dedication to community safety and the protection of public spaces during the busy tourist season.
