**Title: Over 15 Shots Fired in Ayia Napa Attack; Investigation Underway**
**Ayia Napa, Cyprus – August 21, 2026** – A shooting incident in Ayia Napa early Friday morning has left local authorities on high alert as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. More than 15 shots were fired at a 33-year-old Greek Cypriot man, who was unharmed during the incident. The attack occurred around 5:40 AM in the Kokkines area, just a few meters from the victim's home.
The targeted individual is the brother of a 48-year-old man currently serving a prison sentence for a quadruple murder committed in June 2016. This connection has led investigators to believe that the shooting may have been an attempt to send a message to the imprisoned individual. Police sources indicate that the number of shots fired suggests that the attackers were determined to kill the victim.
As the victim drove his car, the assailants, who had been lying in wait, opened fire as he made a right turn, striking his vehicle multiple times. Fortunately, he escaped without injury. Following the attack, police recovered more than 15 cartridge casings from the scene, and a nearby house was also struck by gunfire; however, no residents were reported to be in danger.
In a related development, a vehicle was discovered burning in Avgorou shortly after the shooting. According to Famagusta Police spokesman Andreas Constantinou, this car, identified as a stolen Volvo with false registration plates, is believed to have been used by the attackers. The vehicle had been reported stolen to Larnaca CID in the days leading up to the incident.
The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is intensifying its investigation, which includes examining the burned car and reviewing CCTV footage to track the movements of the assailants. The Forensic Investigation Service of Police Headquarters has also been called in to assist in gathering evidence from both the shooting scene and the burned vehicle.
Authorities have expressed concern that the incident may be linked to organized crime, a situation that has raised alarms within the local community. As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information related to the attack to come forward.
This incident marks a troubling escalation in violence within the region, prompting discussions about safety and security in Ayia Napa, a popular tourist destination known for its nightlife and vibrant atmosphere. Local officials are expected to address the community's concerns as the investigation unfolds.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police remain focused on uncovering the motives behind the attack and identifying those responsible. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are anticipated as more information becomes available.
