**Palmer Misses Another England Camp Due to Injury, Says Tuchel**
England's head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment over forward Cole Palmer's withdrawal from the national squad ahead of the Nations League opener against Spain on Saturday. Palmer, who plays for Chelsea, has been sidelined due to a muscle injury, marking yet another missed opportunity for the young talent to showcase his skills on the international stage.
Palmer's absence is particularly notable given his recent performances for Chelsea. The 24-year-old forward has made a significant impact this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in just seven appearances. His strong start had earned him a recall to the England squad for the Nations League matches against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Croatia. However, his injury has forced him to pull out, leaving Tuchel to lament the missed chance for both the player and the team.
“It’s another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities,” Tuchel stated during a press conference. He emphasized that while he does not blame Palmer for his injuries, the frequency of his absences from training camps is concerning. “I only want to rely on what I personally witness and see within my team. For that, you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp, there is a next level to impress that you cannot achieve because you can only do it with me on the pitch and with us on the pitch. It is a missed opportunity,” Tuchel added.
Despite suggestions that Chelsea might be managing Palmer's workload by allowing him to leave the camp, Tuchel clarified that this was not the case. He pointed out that Palmer had played a full 90 minutes in Chelsea's recent match against Brentford before reporting for international duty. “He plays with discomfort and pain and cannot play on the highest level with discomfort and pain,” Tuchel explained. “Chelsea informed us. That is my understanding. We’re not managing load.”
Tuchel further emphasized the importance of the international break, stating, “This is not an international break. It’s a competitive environment where the players love to train and be together. That’s what we created. We will never compromise on that. We will never let this feeling creep in that the players don’t want to come. We focus on the guys who absolutely want to play for England.”
The Nations League campaign marks the first international window under FIFA's revised match calendar, which combines the traditional September and October breaks. England will kick off their tournament against world champions Spain at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Following that match, the team will travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 29, then head to Rijeka to take on Croatia on October 3, before returning to Wembley to host the Czechs again on October 6.
As England prepares for these crucial fixtures, Tuchel's comments on Palmer highlight the challenges faced by players dealing with injuries and the impact of those injuries on their international careers. The coach's sentiments reflect a broader concern within the football community regarding player health and the balance between club and international commitments.
